Yes - we offer two types of biodegradable glitter: Enviro Glitter, which is compostable, and Hydro Glitter, which is designed to biodegrade in freshwater. Each type behaves differently, so itâs important to choose the option that best suits how and where you plan to use it.
At Glitter Haven, âtraditional glitterâ refers to non-biodegradable glitter, most commonly made from plastic-based films. Our traditional glitters are made from polyester (unless otherwise stated on the product page), are widely used across many industries, and are also the most commonly purchased glitter in our range.
Enviro Glitter is our compostable biodegradable glitter option, made from plant-based materials derived from sustainably managed sources. Itâs shellac-free (making it suitable for vegetarians and vegans), cruelty free, and designed to break down in composting conditions rather than persisting like traditional plastic glitter.
Hydro Glitter is our water-biodegradable glitter, made with BioglitterÂŽ, designed to break down in freshwater environments and compost. Itâs part of our biodegradable glitter range and is available in different formulations based on plastic content: Hydro Glitter 90+ and Hydro Glitter 100.
Hydro Glitter 90+ is one of our water-biodegradable Hydro Glitter options, made with BioglitterÂŽ Sparkle. The â90+â label reflects variation in plastic-free content across the range, with individual glitters containing more than 90% plastic-free material (up to 97%).
Hydro Glitter 100 is one of our water-biodegradable Hydro Glitter options, made with BioglitterÂŽ Pure. The â100â label indicates that this glitter is certified 100% plastic-free and free from microplastics.
âBiodegradable glitterâ isnât one single thing - there are many types, including marine-degradable, freshwater-degradable, industrial-compostable, home-compostable, corn-based quick-dissolving, and plastic-free options, each designed to break down in specific environments and each with its own pros and cons. At Glitter Haven, our biodegradable ranges are Enviro Glitter (certified home compostable), Hydro Glitter 90+ (certified freshwater biodegradable and more than 90% plastic-free), and Hydro Glitter 100 (certified freshwater biodegradable and 100% plastic-free).
Traditional craft glitter is typically made from PET plastic and industrial colourants, which can bleed and have thicker, sharper edges, making it unsuitable for use on skin. Traditional cosmetic grade glitter uses a thinner polyester film with FDA-approved pigments, resulting in finer edges, more sparkle, and a higher-quality glitter thatâs certified safe for skin use.
Biodegradable cosmetic and craft glitters are made from similar plant-based films, but use different colourants. Cosmetic-grade biodegradable glitter uses FDA skin-approved colourants, while craft-grade biodegradable glitter may use industrial colourants and isnât intended for prolonged skin contact (such as makeup or use on sensitive skin); using your hands to mix or play with the glitter should be fine, but discontinue use if irritation occurs
The terms neon and fluro are often used interchangeably, but theyâre not the same. At Glitter Haven, neon refers to bright, highlighter-style colours, while fluro (fluorescent) glitters glow under a black light - some glitters are one or the other, and some are both. See our Neon/Fluorescent collection
At Glitter Haven, a mix refers to multiple cuts of the same colour combined in one glitter, while a blend refers to multiple colours, regardless of cut. For a deeper explanation and examples, see our Whatâs in a Mix? Whatâs in a Blend? page.
GH Academy is where we share deeper information about glitter, including guides, comparisons, definitions and helpful extras. Itâs always growing, so if youâre looking to learn more, thatâs the best place to start - youâll find GH Academy in the main menu under the Glitter Guide.
Biodegradable glitter is shelf stable, meaning it will not start its degradation process sitting on the shelf. The film used to make both water biodegradable and compostable glitter needs microbes to breakdown. Without those microbes (compost-based or water-based) biodegradable glitter will not degrade.
However, it is a good idea to store all your glitters away from direct sunlight and extremes in temperature.
Glitter isnât currently manufactured in Australia, so our glitters are sourced from specialist manufacturers in countries including the UK, Germany, China and the United States. Our custom glitter blends are hand-mixed by us in our Gold Coast warehouse in Queensland.
All Glitter Haven glitters are cruelty free and not tested on animals. Our current glitter ranges are vegan-friendly and free from shellac, and any products that differ will be clearly marked on the individual product page.
Solvent resistance varies by glitter type, and any known resistance (based on manufacturer guidelines) will be listed on the individual product page. As not all glitters are tested in every solvent, testing for your specific application is recommended.
Double bagging means placing each bag or pot of glitter inside an extra protective bag to help prevent spills or damage during transit. Weâve never had a glitter container break in an order, but we double bag anyway - just in case.
Yes - you can request samples via our Sample Request page by providing the glitter name and shape (for example, Polished Silver 0.2mm or Cocktail Party Shaped Blend). If youâre unsure, you can also request samples by colour family, just include as much detail as possible.
Because different cuts and materials vary in weight depending on colour, effect and finish, volume can appear different between glitters. As a guide, XS holds ~5g, S ~8g, M ~20g, L ~100g and XL ~250g - full details are available in our Sizing Guide.
Because projects vary widely, itâs not always possible to recommend an exact amount, but as a general guide, 30g will cover a 30cm square area, and ½ teaspoon covers roughly 7 Ă 15cm when applied to skin. These quantities are provided as a guide only, and Glitter Haven is not responsible for over- or under-ordering based on this information. See more on our coverage page.

For orders containing biodegradable glitter, we use landfill-biodegradable bags and tape supplied by Biogone, which can be disposed of in your regular bin. This applies to the packaging only - biodegradability of glitter itself depends on the glitter type and the environment itâs exposed to.
Yes! Unless otherwise specified, all Glitter Haven traditional and biodegradable glitters are cosmetic grade and safe for use on the skin and in body products.
No - Glitter Haven glitter is not edible and should not be eaten. That said, because itâs cosmetic grade and non-toxic, accidental contact (like a few sparkles in your mouth or on food during application) wonât cause harm.
Glitter Haven glitter is not edible - please donât eat, drink, inhale, inject, or otherwise ingest it unless itâs clearly labelled edible (not just food safe). While cosmetic grade glitter is safe for skin use, care should be taken around delicate areas like the eyes, and use should be discontinued if irritation occurs.
Glitter is decorative at heart, so you can use it to add sparkle to just about anything - nails, hair, face and body, candles, resin and paper crafts, movie props, floors, walls, ceilings, cars, shoes, bags, lamps, playdough⌠the list goes on. If you come up with a unique use, weâd love to see it - just make sure youâre using glitter appropriately for your project, and testing for your application is always recommended.
Glitter can be used in a wide range of applications (like wax, bath products, makeup, nails, paper craft and resin), but the right glitter and method will vary depending on what youâre making. Factors such as heat, solvents, binders, skin contact and finish all matter, so testing in your specific application is essential before committing to a full project. Weâll be sharing tips, how-tos and deeper dives through GH Academy over time, but customers are responsible for ensuring glitter is suitable and safe for their intended use.
